For all of you that joined us for book club, thank you and I hope you had as much fun as I did! I thought the Clifton Wine Bar was really nice! Good food and a great atmosphere. For those of you who did not make it this month, we missed you, but will hopefully see you next time.
We have decided to try to meet the first or last tuesday of every other month. This should give everyone at time to finish at least part of the book chosen for that month. In between book club outings, we thought it might be cool to start a blog about the book we are reading. Some of us found that we were dying to talk about July's book "The Help", while reading it, and found it hard to wait for the outing to arrive. This blog will hopefully remedy this issue making it easy for everyone to get into each book. This will also allow us to communicate making things easier to plan going forward.
So without further ado...Augusts book was recommended by Neil Dalton to Leah Dalton. Here is the information you will need to know.
Book Title: One for the Money
Author: Janet Evanovich
website: www.evanovich.com/novels/novel
Hostess: Leah Dalton
Date, Location and Time: TBD - Either the 1st of last Tuesday every other month
Hopefully everyone gets the idea and will participate.
*Other things you can feel free to post are other books that sound interesting for those of us who are faster readers, or like to read more than one book at a time and ideas of places to meet or themes/activities to follow depending on the book we are reading, etc...
Thanks,
Lyndsey

Hi Ladies...
The new date works for both me and Stacey. I added her to this e-mail. Welcome Stacey to our Ladies Night Out Book Club!
I have an idea for the next book. It's calledThis Is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper.
Tropper returns with a snappy and heartfelt family drama/belated coming-of-age story. Judd Foxman's wife, Jen, has left him for his boss, a Howard Stern–like radio personality, but it is the death of his father and the week of sitting shivah with his enjoyably dysfunctional family that motivates him. Jen's announcement of her pregnancy—doubly tragic because of a previous miscarriage—is followed by the dramas of Judd's siblings: his sister, Wendy, is stuck in an emotionless marriage; brother Paul—always Judd's defender—and his wife struggle with infertility; and the charming youngest, Phillip, attempts a grown-up relationship that only highlights his rakishness. Presided over by their mother, a celebrated parenting expert despite her children's difficulties, the mourning period brings each of the family members to unexpected epiphanies about their own lives and each other. The family's interactions are sharp, raw and often laugh-out-loud funny, and Judd's narration is unflinching, occasionally lewd and very keen. Tropper strikes an excellent balance between the family history and its present-day fallout, proving his ability to create touchingly human characters and a deliciously page-turning story.
I read a lot of reviews on the book and all said its hilarious with LOL moments. Let me know what you all think?! Anyone hear of the author? If someone else has a book suggestion and wants to take the next turn thats fine too.

Hey ladies,
ReplyDeleteI believe that I sent an email about the book but my mind has failed me yet again. The next book for book club will be 'Little Bee'. I picked it because a colleague said she read it and really liked the book but then I told my mom and she said she didn't like the book...We will have to see what everyone thinks. I just started the book- I am one paragragh in and there was a quote in teh first chapter that I liked.
"We must see all scars as beauty...take it from me, a scar does not form on the dying. A scar means, I survived."
Hi Girls,
ReplyDeleteI just started listening to the book.
The narrator is taking me a bit to get use to.
So far I am interested in the book and where the story is going. I like these human survival stories because they just remind me how lucky I am and how good life is.
Karen I agree that is a good quote.
When I heard it this morning I thought the same thing.
Are we still meeting the first Tuesdsay next month to discuss this book? August 2nd?
So this book doesn't seem to have a lot of LOL moments like the other book.
ReplyDeleteI recently got to the part in the book where is explains how Sarah lost her middle finger. Wow!
I really liked the book alot until Lawrence - after the funeral & from that point forward...what a douche. Who does that?!?!?! He had 2 briefly redeeming moments which I won't get into here but ugh. I think his character just distracted from Sarah/Little Bee's story. I know he played a part in it for Sarah but I really kept saying to myself get the hell out of the story.
ReplyDeleteKaren, I picked out that same quote when I read that passage. Actually, I have a list of quotes I pulled while reading.
"I was torn b/w two kinds of shame. On the one hand, the disgrace of not discharging a human obligation. On the other hand the madness of being the first in the crowd to move."
"Horror in your country is something you take a dose of to remind yourself that you are not suffering from it."
"...how it was possible to be drowing in a river of people and also to feel so very, very alone."
"But life is not inclined to let any of us escape."
"After that, it's the growing sense of dissatisfaction that keeps one awake at night. The brain refusing to let go of those alternative lives that might have been."
"...trouble is like the ocean. It covers two thirds of the world."
"At some point you just have to turn around and face your life head-on."
"People wonder how they are ever going to change their lives, but really it is frighteningly easy."
Now that I wrote a book I'm curious to see what everyone else thinks.
I finished the book also...can't wait to get together to chat about it. Glad you wrote out the quotes T, I got goose bumps on a few of them.
ReplyDeleteI was feeling the same way about Lawrence, he was such a jerk. Can't wait to see if anyone liked him!
We are shooting for September 20th to meet. I will decide on a location the closer we get to the date.
Just finished the book. Good pick Karen darling!
ReplyDeleteI like how the author ended the story.
T darling I am glad you list a few of the quotes.
My favorite...
"People wonder how they are ever going to change their lives, but really it is frighteningly easy."
Darlings I am looking forward to meeting on Sept 20th to discuss the book.
